Jurupa Valley, CA – The Jurupa Valley Coalition is taking significant steps to revitalize Pat Merrick Dog Park, the city’s only city-owned park, with an ambitious project aimed at improving facilities and creating a more welcoming space for residents and their pets. This initiative, spearheaded by the Coalition’s Funding Director Tyler Byrne, comes at a time when the park’s deteriorating condition has raised concerns within the community.
A Vision for Change
Pat Merrick Dog Park, unlike other parks in the city that are managed by the Jurupa Area Recreation and Park District (JARPD), had fallen into disrepair. The park’s fences were rusted and in need of a fresh coat of paint, water fountains were barely functional, and some cement benches were broken. The lighting poles throughout the park had been vandalized, leaving them inoperable, while dog waste disposal receptacles were rusted and in many cases unusable. Community members, particularly dog owners, had been stepping in to make repairs on their own, patching up fountains and fixing benches in an effort to keep the park accessible.
Recognizing the need for action, Tyler Byrne took the lead on finding a solution that didn’t rely on the city’s resources. “It became evident that the city wasn’t prioritizing the park, so I made it my mission to find a creative way to get this project done without waiting for the leadership to act,” said Byrne. His determination led to the formation of a partnership with three of the four dispensaries in Jurupa Valley—Green Chamber Dispensary, Remedy Room, Stiiizy, and Empire Twin Palm Dispensary—who generously contributed to fund the project.
Initial Steps: Community Engagement and Planning
This collaboration allowed the Coalition to purchase new water fountains for the park, the first major improvement in the revitalization process. The Coalition is also focused on adding new trash receptacles and benches as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance the space.
Although the Coalition raises funds through donations from businesses and community members throughout the city, this particular project was a collaboration with three of the four dispensaries in Jurupa Valley. We received generous contributions primarily from Wes Klein, owner of Green Chamber Dispensary, along with Remedy Room, Stiiizy, and Empire Twin Palm Dispensary. It is this innovative approach to funding that has allowed us to support projects that better our city and its community. Our organization prioritizes benefits over local politics, working with anyone interested in making Jurupa Valley a better place.
Support from City Officials
In addition to the support from local businesses, the Coalition received crucial backing from City Manager Rod Butler, who helped facilitate communication with the city’s Public Works Operations Manager, Dave French. French played an instrumental role in ensuring the timely installation of the new water fountains.
“City Manager Rod Butler has been extremely supportive, and Dave French’s help in getting the fountains installed was invaluable,” said Byrne. “We couldn’t have done this without their assistance.”
Progress and Future Plans
With renewed determination, we continue to push forward with our revitalization efforts. The installation of the new water fountains is seen as a crucial first step in a series of planned improvements for Pat Merrick Dog Park. Future phases will include adding more trash receptacles and benches, creating a more enjoyable environment for all visitors.
“We are committed to transforming Pat Merrick Dog Park into a space that truly serves our community and their pets,” Byrne said. “With continued support and collaboration, we can create a park that everyone can enjoy.”
A Community Effort
The revitalization of Pat Merrick Dog Park exemplifies the power of community involvement and the dedication of the Jurupa Valley Coalition. As we work to improve the park, we are fostering a sense of camaraderie among residents and encouraging them to take pride in their local spaces.
As we move forward with our plans, we invite the community to stay engaged and support our efforts. The journey to revitalize Pat Merrick Dog Park is not just about physical improvements; it’s about creating a vibrant, welcoming space that strengthens community bonds and enhances the quality of life for all Jurupa Valley residents.
Conclusion
“As the Funding Director of the Jurupa Valley Coalition, I am excited about the journey we are undertaking to revitalize Pat Merrick Dog Park. This initiative highlights the importance of community advocacy and collaboration. Through determination, strategic planning, and active engagement, we are paving the way for a brighter future for this beloved park, ensuring it remains a cherished space for generations to come. I encourage everyone to stay tuned for updates as we progress, and I invite you all to be part of this transformation!”
